Sans Senja - Marathon
This will be a mountain marathon that has a bit of everything - airy mountain terrain, marsh, trail, gravel road, scree, and snow. The length of the route will be 42.3 km if you run the shortest way up and down all the mountains, but we assume that most people will zigzag a bit so that the distance will probably be closer to 44 km.
The route is about 1800 meters in total ascent, with Lasset and Skarelvfjellet as the highest. After 14 km you will meet participants who run Sans Senja Ultra100, and in the last 12 kilometers you will run with participants from Skyrace. We anticipate that the fastest runners will run at an average speed of around 9 km/h.
Start / Finish
The start is at Gibostad school at 10:00am.
The secretariat is located at Sport1 Finnsnes, Amfisenteret. Open Thursday July 8 from 10:00am, to 8:00pm. On Friday it is open from 9:00am to 7:00pm. After 7:00pm it will not be possible to pick up the start number before 8:00am, but it will then be at the starting area.
It is allowed to have your own support. Those who are to be support must register when they are handed out the start number. Support is only allowed to serve participants at the official checkpoints. From Trælvikvannet and into Husøy, it is allowed for support to run with the participant to the finish line.
We are able to help with transport to the starting line from the Finnsnes area. We can also help with transport back to the start after finishing. Return to start will take place after the cut-off time at Trælvikvatnan.
All participants gets Finisher medals, as well as hot food and drinks after the finish. The three fastest men and women receive cash prizes.
Leave no trace
Since we are going to travel outside in a lot of untouched nature, we expect that everything that the participant takes out into the terrain will be brought back in, ie it is STRICTLY forbidden to leave rubbish or other stuff in the terrain. Even banana peels should be transported to the nearest checkpoint. In addition, we ask participants to show consideration if you meet animals during the race. We must not scare or chase them away. The participants should instead take a small detour.
Checkpoints / Food stations
We recommend the runners to fill their bottles themselves, but then in running streams or larger waters that they pass during the race.
Part 1 – Gibostad to Lysvannet – 14 km
It will be a pacerunner the first kilometer – through Gibostad center to the old sawmill. From here there is a tractor / cart road. After about 4 kilometers you meet a gravel road that goes on for 10 km. After this you arrive at the trail's 1st checkpoint - the power station at Lysvannet.
Part 2 – Lysvannet to Stønnesbotten 15 km
From here on and in you will run together with participants from Sans Senja Ultra100. This part may also have some snow. After a short and steep climb from the checkpoint, there is a good path. It is easy to run, and the path takes you all the way to the dam by Svarthollvannet. From the dam, the trail gets a bit uneven with a lot of mossy and rocky terrain all the way to the foot of Breitinden. At Breitinden, the ascent begins up to Lasset and the rocky section is over. From Lasset it is an easy run down to Stønnesbotn, the last two kilometers are gravel road. The trail will only be marked with the Sans Senja Flag. Stønnesbotn is the trail's second checkpoint. Note: here you may want to switch to coarser shoes.
Part 3 Stønnesbotn to Skarelvfjellet 4 km
After a kilometer of asphalt, it carries out into the forest again, and the route's second toughest climb awaits, up to Skarelvfjellet. At Skarelvfjellet you will enter the Skyrace route, and probably meet Skyrace runners. This is the trail's 3rd checkpoint
Part 4 Skarelvfjellet to Trælvikvatnan 5 km
Quick descent to Keipelven. Here you should fill your bottles with water. Then it's the last real tricky part of the day, Tarbergkollen. Once you are up on it you start to see the end goal Husøy. At the end of this stretch there is a snow part down to the 4th and last checkpoint.
Part 5 Trælvikvatnan to Husøy 5 km
There is some ascent and some uneven terrain the first kilometer from the checkpoint and up until you hit the main path (about 100 meters). After than it is an easy run out towards Riven. From Riven there are only downhills left to Husøy. It can be a little rough the last 150 meters, so you should be extra careful here. The last 2 km is flat, and primarily gravel road.
